Montis edge Goshen to win 10th Division III title in 13 years

MONTICELLO – Monticello boys head Coach Matt Buddenhagen, distance specialist Joe Seidl and jumping guru Brian McAveny knew the Panthers would need everything they could summon to top Goshen this year to keep the Montis’ historic Division dominance alive, especially after graduating so many point getters in June.

With the departure of distance maven Evan Waterton and jumper extraordinaire Jadden Bryant, two of last year’s track and field super team that also included RJ Patrick and the Suasey twins, Buddenhagen looked over the array of his squad, mostly underclassmen and figured this to be a rebuilding year.

“I told the kids this was going to be razor close and things may or may not go our way.”

But whatever coaches envision often doesn’t consider the will and determination of young athletes.

When his vaunted 4x100 team was disqualified on the final baton pass, resulting in a ten-point swing, Buddenhagen’s heart sank. But then came the news from the throwing area that Jesse Corces had taken first in the shot put and the discus. David Williams’ capture of the long and triple jump and the heroics of Eduardo Salinas winning the 1500 and 800 would prove to be part of the winning equation as the Panthers outpointed the Gladiators 79.16 to 61.83 for the latest win in the Panthers’ uncanny dynasty.

“What a total team effort,” Buddenhagen commented.

The win was the latest in a run that included Division III titles from 2010-13, 2015-17 and most recently from 2019-2023. Remember that Covid cancelled the 2020 season, or this would now be 11 titles in 13 years. And the good news is the vast majority of the team will be back next year.
