Parksville glows during first annual menorah lighting

Posted

A crowd of people gathered outside of Cabernet Frank’s on Main Street this past Saturday for the First Annual Parksville Menorah Sunset Stroll and Lighting.

Guests took a walk on the Parksville Rail Trail before enjoying some homemade Latkes served with applesauce and sour cream by Cabernet Frank’s. Hot chocolate also kept visitors warm as a light snow began to fall.

Town of Liberty Supervisor Frank DeMayo welcomed everyone in attendance.

“This is really the beginning of a season of hope,” DeMayo said. “We’re really excited to be able to have this here … the Town of Liberty is really a diverse community and we celebrate that diversity.”

The 8-foot tall menorah   was built by community volunteers and is powered by a solar battery. The project was made possible through a Sullivan Renaissance Neighborhood Beautification Grant.

The opening dedication was delivered by Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Jamie Schmeiser.

“As we dedicate the menorah tonight … let’s remember the small acts of kindness in our community, the small act of helping one another and our shared goals of a thriving Parksville and a thriving Sullivan County,” Schmeiser said.

Judy Siegel, president of congregation Agudas Achim thanked everyone who helped make the menorah a reality. Siegel said how that evening’s event, like their congregation itself, represented “a gathering of brothers and sisters.”

A musical performance was provided by Tobi Innerfield and Sarah Weber as well as a closing benediction.

“This is really a community effort. There were people of all ages involved in this,” said community volunteer Hope Blecher as she explained how the symbols on each of the menorah’s branches is especially significant to Parksville.

Another candle will be illuminated every evening to mark each day of Chanukkah.

“This is the first annual [Menorah lighting], and I look forward to seeing you next year,” Blecher said. “May you all have a wonderful holiday season. Whatever you celebrate may it be joyous and happy and healthy.”
