Pigskin preview: Eight-man season heating up

SULLIVAN COUNTY -- When it comes to the current standings of the Section 9 Eight-Man Football League division that Sullivan County teams call home, like the popular saying in the card game Crazy Eights goes, “All eights are wild.”

Anything can happen as Roscoe/Manor, Sullivan West and Tri-Valley, in that order, are battling for the top spot in the standings. However, a string of wins by Fallsburg and Eldred, who played their first games of the year last week, could make things interesting.

Here's a breakdown of the action ...

Tonight's games

SW at Fallsburg, 4:30 p.m.

The Comets are looking to bounce back from a 38-0 loss to Roscoe/Livingston Manor last week, and will have the home crowd -- albeit a little smaller than usual -- in their corner. They'll have no easy task as they host the red hot Sullivan West Bulldogs who are on a two-game winning streak.

Ellenville at Eldred, 7 p.m.

The Yellowjackets were overpowered last week in a 36-6 loss to the Sullivan West Bulldogs. Their opponents, the Ellenville Blue Devils, haven't had much better luck in their three games of action, losing twice to Tri-Valley and losing a close battle to Roscoe/Livingston Manor.

Tomorrow's action

Tri-Valley at Roscoe/Manor, 1:30 p.m.

Perennial powerhouse Tri-Valley, despite being without a couple key players from last year's squad, were primed for another big season. Things got off to a great start after the opening week, but they were in the wrong place at the wrong time in week two when they traveled to Lake Huntington to face the Bulldogs. The Bears rebounded last week, with another win against Ellenville, but head into the Blue Devils' playground in what should be an outstanding Saturday afternoon gridiron battle.

Will the Bears be able to slow Roscoe/Manor's momentum? Another victory will keep the Blue Devils in the driver's seat for representing their division in the Section 9 Eight-Man Football Championship game.

The 11-man docket

Both Monticello and Liberty will be in action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. hosting James I. O'Neill and Chester respectively. The Indians (0-2) had two tough outings, with shutout losses to O'Neill and Rondout Valley in the past two weeks. Monticello, who has been in a rebuilding mode the past few seasons, will have a serious challenge on their hands with the Raiders.

NOTE: Please check Section9sports.org for updates on game times as there have been many cancellations during the pandemic.
