Lady Bears' staunch defense leads to road win

LIVINGSTON MANOR –Tri-Valley visited Livingston Manor on Wednesday night, deploying a full-court press and establishing their offense early in the 37-11 win.

The Lady Bears were looking for a bounce back game after dropping back to back league matchups against Sullivan West and then Seward, and the urgency showed early.

With a game-high 17 points, Jenna Carmody got the offense going early for Tri-Valley, scoring eight in the first quarter. By the end of the frame, Tri-Valley had jumped out to a 14-3 lead, with their defense forcing turnovers and bad looks for the Lady Wildcats throughout the quarter.

Tri-Valley’s offense cooled off in the second quarter, but they still outscored Livingston Manor 8-2 to take a 22-5 lead into the half.

Carmody kickstarted the offense for the Lady Bears again in the third quarter, scoring the other nine of her 17 points, and Tri-Valley continued the trend of winning each quarter. By the end of the third it was 36-7.

In the fourth quarter the Lady Bears were able to ease off their press, but continued a strong defensive effort allowing just four points to Livingston Manor. Tri-Valley’s offensive urgency had also subsided with the 29 point lead, And they only added one point to their total before the end.

“Everything that could go wrong for us did tonight,” Livingston Manor Coach Maggi Fitzpatrick said following the loss. “I’m proud of the girls for how they mentally came back in the second half. I’m happy with our adjustments and how they finished the game.”

One of the adjustments that Livingston Manor had to account for was the Man-to-man defense that Tri-Valley deployed in the game. “We need more confidence with man pressure.”

Tri-Valley Coach Jason Closs was happy with how his team performed.

“It was a good bounce back game for us,” he explained. “In our games against Sullivan West and Seward we struggled to generate offense early, and even though we started to come back in both, we fell a bit short. Tonight we were able to establish our offense in the early minutes, and it makes games easier when you can do that.”
