Report wolf sightings!

Posted

The NY Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) said genetic testing confirmed that a canid taken by a hunter in Otsego County, NY in 2021 was a wolf. DEC also said that just a few wolves and wolf hybrids have been documented over the last 20 years in New York State. In most cases, analysis indicated that these animals may have been released from captivity.

DEC reminds hunters and trappers that wolves are protected in New York as an endangered species. Wild wolves are present in Ontario and Quebec Canada, it is possible for them to travel into New York State. And with the opening of the NY coyote hunting and trapping seasons, care should be taken in identifying any large canids that they may see.

DEC is asking anyone who thinks they have seen a wolf, to please report it to them. And if possible, get a picture of the animal.

DEC is also asking trappers, if they have a large canine in a trap that appears to be over 50 pounds, please contact NYDEC law enforcement at 844-332-3267 before dispatching the animal.

Ammo Supply Improves!

Ammo supply issues have improved from last fall, but supplies are still nowhere near where they once were, and prices have not fallen much from their 2021 peaks for many calibers and brands.

The ammo supply crunch still exists in some places for popular rounds such as .30-06, .270, .243 Winchester and even for the .45 Long Colt. However, many gun shops are finding that .308, 12-gauge shotgun shells and .223 and 5.56 rounds are in better supply than last year.

A gun shop owner said that people from other states have told him they can still get whatever they want, and he blames the supply problems on New York’s strict gun laws, while increases in gun sales in recent years have also led to more demand for ammunition. He also said some gun and ammo distributers won’t deal with you if you are from New York State.

An Invitation for All!

The Town of Bethel Republican Party and the Town of Bethel Conservative Party invites all to come to Sorella’s Restaurant in Kauneonga Lake on Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m., to learn all about the new NYS Concealed Pistol Carry Laws.

There will be three speakers for the evening: Sheriff Mike Schiff, Sullivan County Clerk Russell Reeves and Pistol Instructor Richard Shelton.
