ROSCOE - Perfect weather and panoramic views greeted 72 golfers at the eighth annual Roscoe Kiwanis Golf Tournament, held at Tennanah Lake Golf & Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon, August 2.

Rich Schmidt of Jeffersonville ran away from the field with a one-over-par 73 to capture his first Kiwanis title, and added a closest to the pin prize as well. Schmidt, who played consistently well all day, overcame a double bogey six on the sixth hole with birdies at ten and twelve, and won by five strokes.

Roscoe Central School golf team members Paul Stock Jr. and Chuck Husson IV finished tied at 78. Husson's impressive one-under-par 35 on the difficult back nine was not enough to make up for a rough front nine of seven over, and after a match of cards, Stock was awarded second place, and Husson third.

In ladies' play, Barbara Trask of Jeffersonville played her best round in eight attempts at the tournament to finish with a 92 and win her first ladies; low gross title. Trask also copped the ladies' long drive competition.

The low net prize, utilizing a modified Callaway scoring system, went to Callicoon's Joel Dnistrian with a net score of two-under-par 70. The Callaway system, which eliminates a player's worst holes based upon the overall score, worked well for Dnistrian, who played steady golf with the exception of a double bogey seven on the par-5 twelfth and quadruple bogey nine on the par-5 fourteenth hole.

Several players were tied behind Dnistrian at net 72. After matching cards, Tom Roseo, who also captured a longest drive trophy, and Lonnie Ackerley, both of Roscoe, were awarded second and third low net respectively.

Other winners included Patrick Murtagh, closest to the pin; Mitch Lake, closest to the pin; Lew Hendrickson, closest to the pin; Rick Gray, longest drive; and Ed Lohr, lowest score for a visiting Kiwanian.

Tournament Director Rusty Pomeroy thanked those who participated in this year's event, particularly the sponsors who provide much of the revenue that Kiwanis generates.

“Our goal over the last eight years has been to keep the entry fee into the tournament down, while still offering great prizes for our golfers,” said Pomeroy. “The only way to balance this with the need to raise funds for Kiwanis activities is through tournament sponsors, and the local community has always come through for us.”
