Richard Gawenus (Dick), age 82, passed away at home on August 14, 2021 in Horseheads, NY after a long battle with cancer. Richard was born in Queens, NY on August 4, 1939 the son of the late Karl and Mildred Dorfman Gawenus.

He was joined shortly thereafter by sister Wanda and the family moved to Silver Lake Farms near Narrowsburg, NY where he grew up. After graduating from Narrowsburg High School, Dick attended Bucknell University and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

He relocated to Binghamton, NY and worked at New York State Electric & Gas Company. Dick met his wife Ann Bluedorn while in Binghamton, and they were married December 22, 1962 in Waterloo, Iowa. After a two year tour for Dick with The U.S. Army in the 6th Missile Battalion of the 56 Artillery Division at Fort Bliss, Texas they moved to Elmira, NY. Dick was President of Brady Supply, and worked many years for C&S Electric and VJ Brown companies as a Sales VP of high voltage electrical equipment.

Dick was an avid downhill skier, golfer and boater. He enjoyed Greek Peak for many years and was President of the ski racing club in the 1980’s. Dick traveled often and he and Ann made many trips to the Colorado Rockies and the European Alps. Dick also enjoyed spending time with his dogs. Dick loved hosting a good party and spending time at the Horseheads Elks Club.

Dick is survived by three boys: Timothy (Lisa) Gawenus and their children Madison and Jacob of Pittsburgh, PA, Randy Gawenus of Horseheads, NY, and Kevin (Lisa) Gawenus and their son Fritz of Lafayette, CO. Dick enjoyed the companionship of two foreign exchange students Kerstin Ockernahl of Germany and Kasper Bryld of Denmark.

He is predeceased by his wife Ann and his sister, Wanda.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Lynch Funeral Home, 318 West Broad Street, Horseheads, NY on Friday, August 20, 2021 from 5 to 7 PM. Dick’s Funeral Services will be held at The North Presbyterian Church in Elmira, NY on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 11 AM. Dick will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Ann in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, NY.

Flowers are acceptable or Dick may be remembered through memorial donations to the Horseheads Community Animal Shelter, 150 Wygant Road, Horseheads, NY or The Salvation Army, Elmira, NY Chapter. Word of Condolence and Memories may be shared at www.lynchsfuneralhome.com.
