Run for John; 123 runners race to help defeat ALS in 2023 5K Sap Run

JEFFERSONVILLE – On Saturday, May 20, the Town of Jeffersonville hosted its 5K Sap Run and Walk. 123 runners and 66 walkers participated in the event which went off at 9 am on Main Street in front of Jeff Bank.

Registration for the race began at 7 a.m. in Backyard Park, right across the bridge from the start line on Main Street. The finish line for the race was adjacent to the park.

Middletown native Rob Roach crossed the finish line with ease, as he was nearly two minutes ahead of the rest of the pack with a winning time of 19:16.5.

The top female finisher was Kristy Sigelakis of Jeffersonville. She ran the course in 21:36.3, which put her fourth place overall.

This year’s race was dedicated to the race’s founder, John McCormack, and his battle against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS. The 5K Sap Run is a descendent of McCormack’s 5K Jeff Jam which began in 1996.

Race participants were able to pay an additional $5.00 to receive a Sap Run ALS t-shirt. Non-runners were able to support the cause with a $30 t-shirt purchase, as well as donating any amount to the event on Eventbrite.

“It meant a lot to me to have the race my sister Beth and I founded years ago, as the Jeff Jam, to be dedicated to my fight with ALS this year,” McCormack said. “The outpouring of support from the community was truly humbling. Family, friends, former classmates and complete strangers all joined my fight by raising money for the ALS Association.”

McCormack said that the ALS Association has been there to help him from the beginning. He said the support and prayers from the community make him want to fight harder to defeat ALS.

McCormack said he started a clinical trial for an experimental drug known as ABBV-CLS-7262 on Tuesday, May 23, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

“Participating in trials is the only way we will beat ALS and find a cure,” he said. “I am a lucky man to have the amazing family and friends I have.”

Sponsors for the 2023 5K Sap Run were A & G Home Improvements; Jeffersonville Bake Shop; Land & Water Realty; Law Offices of William H. Chellis P.C.;  Diehl Homestead Farm; Tavern on Main; Jeff Bank; Gardner & Co.; Mountain Bear Crafts; Dick’s Auto Sales, Inc.; Century 21 Geba Realty; Samba Cafe; Mike Preis Inc.
