Tri-Valley senior Dylan Poley holds 5K at school track to raise awareness for veterans

GRAHAMSVILLE – On Sunday morning, senior Tri-Valley student Dylan Poley hosted the first-ever Veteran’s 5K at Tri-Valley Secondary School’s track. The race was for Poley’s Civics project which he wanted to find a great cause to help raise money and awareness for.

“I thought a lot about this,” Poley said. “I really wanted to do something to help veterans as I don’t think we do enough for them.”

All the proceeds for the 5K are going towards raising money for the Brian Bill Foundation, whose mission is to help heal the invisible wounds of war for the country’s Special Operations Forces.

After graduating high school later this month, Poley will be attending Virginia Military Institute, where he will play running back on the football team.

The race itself started at approximately 11:15 right outside of the track. Runners made two big loops through the woods and up tough hills, before making their way to the finish line on the track.

It was a tight finish for first place, with youngsters and future track stars Chase Sheeley and Bradley Kenney duking it out the whole way. Sheeley wound up pulling away at the last second and defeated his buddy Kenney by mere feet.

With those two battling it out for first place, the rest of the field was minutes behind. Coming in third place three minutes later was Matthew Fanslau.

Fifth-place finisher Connor Williams, who came in five minutes after the top two finishers, said, “I just couldn’t keep up with them.”

The winner for the overall female category was Samantha Mennech, coming in at 32:02. That was good for seventh-overall for the 16-year old.
