Residents of local school districts throughout Sullivan County are preparing to vote in school board elections and on proposed budgets.

Here is Part II of our school budget briefs.

Liberty

District residents of the Liberty Central School District will have the ability to vote on the budget at the Liberty High School gym anytime between Noon and 9 p.m on May 17.

The 2022-2023 school year total budget is $57,543,257.

The percentage increase from last year's budget total is 6.63 percent, with the proposed tax levy receiving no changes and remaining $18,760,162.

No notable changes are reported for this upcoming year's budget.

There are no capital projects being voted on, with the only other proposition being a bussing contract.

Voters will be passing judgement on a proposed five-year contract with Rolling V Transportation Corporation for Student Transportation Services beginning July 1, 2022.

The contract calls for five percent annual increases for 10-month/regular school year transportation services, two-month/ summer school transportation services, and 10-month athletics, extracurricular and field trip services.

There are three positions on the school board of education that are opening up. The four candidates on the ballot running for positions are Timothy Hamblin, John Nichols, Philip Olsen and Matthew DeWitt.

The three that are elected will serve a three-year term beginning in July 2022.

“With this budget, our goal is to provide students with stability and opportunities to grow and explore in the classroom and beyond,” said Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sullivan. “We are focused on a strong curriculum and the extracurricular activities and interscholastic athletic programs that mean so much to our students and our community.”

Livingston Manor

District residents of the Livingston Manor Central School District will be able to vote between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Livingston Manor Central School gym on May 17.

The total amount of the budget for the district is $18,791,973, with the percentage increase from last year's budget total is 3.62 percent.

The proposed tax levy increase is 2.68 percent, totaling at $9,227,503.

There are no notable changes reported in this upcoming year's budget and there are no capital projects being voted on this election.

With one vacancy on the school board of education needing to be filled, James Buck and Gordon LeRoy are both on the ballot for the three-year term that lasts from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025. The seat is presently held by Buck, whose term expires on June 30, 2022.

Roscoe

Residents of the Roscoe Central School District are invited to vote between the times of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Roscoe Central School gym on May 17.

The total amount of the 2022-2023 budget is $10,251,869.

The percentage increase from last year's budget total is 3.41 percent, and the proposed tax levy decrease is -1.14 percent, totalling at $5,511,505.

There are no notable changes in this year's budget, and there are no capital projects being voted on.

Included in the proposed budget is a $100,000 capota outlay project for the continued annual abatement and replacement of floor times in the primary wing of the building, of which state aid will reimburse 51.9 percent of the project cost next year.

Gary Dahlman is the only candidate on the ballot in the running for the one vacancy of a three-year term on the school board of education.

Sullivan West 

Residents in the Sullivan West Central School District will head to the polls on Tuesday, May 17 to vote on the proposed budget, a capital reserve fund proposition and candidates for the school board of education.

The proposed $40,893,029 budget for the 2022-2023 school year represents a 3.77 percent increase from last year’s adopted budget of $39,407,116.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bressler said Sullivan West is proposing a 2.5 percent tax levy increase, which remains under the tax cap.

Polls will be open from noon until 9 p.m. at the Delaware Youth Center, the Tusten Library and the Sullivan West Elementary School. Visit swcsd.org to confirm your polling location.

Residents will vote to elect three members to the Board of Education for three-year terms commencing July 1, 2022 and expiring on June 30, 2025.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bressler said the district was finally able to establish a Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter and there are over 50 students involved in the program.

According to the district, the budget includes funding to add an elementary school library media specialist. Other positions the district plans to add to the middle/high school are an additional science teacher and special education teacher, as well as making the part-time physical education teacher a full-time position.

The district plans to apply for grant funding to offer a universal pre-kindergarten program.
