MONTICELLO — A video surfaced on social media this week of a fight between two students onboard a school bus in the Monticello Central School District.

The cellphone video, which recorded the incident on Monday, shows one student being punched in the face and then being thrown on the floor of the bus before he’s repeatedly stomped on by another student.

The Monticello Central School District released a statement saying that they “were aware of the altercation” and are following up with the students and families involved “to provide appropriate district resources.”

The district said they cannot share specific remedial action due to student privacy laws, and any actions taken will be in accordance with their student code of conduct.

“The health and safety of our students is always the district’s top priority, and we act swiftly on any reported incidence of violence, aggression or bullying,” the statement read.

The incident has lead some parents to call for bus monitors to prevent future incidents of bullying or violence.

The district says they do not have bus monitors on every route due to budgetary limits and staffing limitations imposed due to COVID-19, however, their vehicles are equipped with cameras that enable school staff to monitor and review student activity and incidents on buses.

“We encourage any students who experience or witness incidents like this to report it to a staff member, so that we can promptly address it. We also have an ‘Anonymous Alerts’ platform that enables staff, students or community members to anonymously submit concerns to school administration.”

Hudson Valley News 12, which first reported on the video, received another recorded school bus fight that occurred in the Monticello district in 2019.

Again, MCSD said they were aware of the incident but could not comment citing student privacy laws.

“We’ll continue to review our programming and code of conduct to see how we can continue fostering a culture of kindness and a safe learning environment for our students,” the district said.
