SHAM Grooming building a reputation for excellent pet care

Posted

My love of animals started at a young age. Growing up in a family of 5, animals were always a large part of our lives.

My name is Kaitlyn Roegner and I just opened a grooming business, SHAM Grooming at 523 Old Willow Ave, Honesdale, PA. People always ask where did you come up with that name?

I took the first letter of my current pets’ names and created “SHAM.” They are more than just my pets, they are family and a very big part of my life.

My love for them gave me the inspiration to want to do something to help others with their animal family members. I completed a course at Penn Foster for Pet Grooming and then apprenticed with Lisa Fenell at Canine Connection.

I started by doing mobile grooming and still offer that service in certain instances. The opportunity arose for me to open my own grooming shop and, with the help of my family, SHAM Grooming was opened at its current location in April 2022.

I have groomed dogs, cats, and rabbits. I am trained in skin care, nail care, ear care, anal gland care, and haircuts related to all types of breeds. Each animal has a unique personality and I find it easy to create a bond with them where they trust me.

One of the most important things is to know when the animal is being stressed. As a groomer you do not want to stress an animal as it will make future grooming more difficult.

You want the animal relaxed and comfortable with you and that is my main goal.

I have groomed animals that have gone to other groomers who had difficulty doing certain things in the grooming process due to the animal’s behavior. With consistency, showing the animal respect and that you are not going to harm them, I have been able to complete the entire grooming process on difficult animals.

There are times also that I know when the animal is stressed and has reached their limit and was unable to complete the entire grooming process.

These are the animals that over time and repetition will reach the point where they will be relaxed and comfortable and the entire grooming process will be able to be completed. It is important to start grooming your animal at a young age as this gets them used to being touched and comfortable with the grooming process.

A lot of people say, “My dog has short hair and doesn’t need grooming.” It is important to have them bathed and blown out to remove the shedding hair. This helps cut down on shedding and skin conditions.

Dogs who do have longer coats need to be brushed daily so their hair does not mat. Matted hair pulls on the dog’s skin, makes it very uncomfortable and painful for them, and does irritate and cause skin conditions.

I have groomed dogs with very matted hair where the only option is to shave them down. I recommend and instruct my clients on the type of pet they have and how to properly care for them in between groomings.

Call today (570) 470-3147, make an appointment and give me the opportunity to pamper and care for your animal family member. Become part of the SHAM Grooming Family!
