Slalom racing returns to Holiday Mtn

MONTICELLO – Section IX Division 1 Alpine Skiing slalom racing returned to Holiday Mountain for the first time in two years, on Wednesday evening, January 31. Both girls and boys skiers from Monticello, Tri-Valley/Fallsburg/Liberty and Sullivan West took to the recently reinvigorated and reopened ski hill, as well as non-county teams Onteora and Kingston. Those same teams also came out to Holiday for another race on Thursday, February 1.

For the girls' race on Wednesday, Monticello captured two of the top three finishes. Monticello's Alexis Heins came in first with a time of 32.54. Onteora's Rylan Reynolds finished second with a time of 36.51. Hanna Cavello, also of Monticello came in third with a time of 37.78. 4th place was captured by Kingston's Mackenzie Martin with a time of 38.53 and 5th by Onteora's Nadou Louis finishing with a time of 40.30. Finishing just .04 sec later in 6th place was Tri Valley's Grace Gozza with a 40.34 followed closely by teammate Madeline Pantel from Fallsburg with a 40.48. Coming in 8th place was Monticello's Madelyn Cavello with a time of 40.76.

Thursday's race was won by 2023 State Champion Alexis Heins of Monticello with a time of 32.67. She has won all 6 races so far this season.

Team requirements were not met for any of the girls teams on Thursday, with Alexis Heins winning the race with times of 32.67 and 32.98. Her teammates Madelyn and Hanna Cavello finished seventh (42.77, 44.24) and eighth (1:02.70, 42.09), respectively. TV/Fallsburg/Liberty had three skiers place in the overall results, Madeline Pantel (40.54, 41.47) finishing in fourth, Brenna Mangan (52.97, 59.63) in ninth and Isabeela Wanger (1:08.38, 56.62)  in 11th. 

The remaining schedule, as long as the weather cooperates, for Section IX Alpine Skiing is as follows:

  • 2/6 - 4:30 PM - Mt. Peter - Division 1/2 - Boys Slalom #3
  • 2/7 - 4:30 PM - Holiday - Division 1/2 - Girls Slalom #3
  • 2/8 - 4:30 PM - Holiday - Division 1 - Girls and Boys Slalom #4 
  • 2/14 - 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM - Hunter Mountain - Section 9 Championships
    • 10:00 AM - Girls Giant Slalom and Boys Slalom
    •     1:00 PM - Girls Slalom and Boys Giant Slalom
  • 2/26-27 - Lake Placid - NYSPHAA Ski Championships
