State funds will pay to improve County’s Fire Training Facility

Gunther helps County land $250,000 Grant

MONTICELLO – Sullivan County and Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther are pleased to announce State approval of a $250,000 grant to rehab the County’s heavily-used fire training tower and to build an adjacent equipment storage facility.

“I am very happy to have worked with the Sullivan County Division of Public Safety in securing a $250,000 grant to upgrade and repair its fire tower and burn building,” Gunther said. “Importantly, this facility is used by first responders across the County. They do a tremendous job in keeping our County safe and need the ability to train in a proper facility.”

Thanks to Assemblywoman Gunther’s strong support, the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York’s State and Municipal Facilities Assistance Program will reimburse the County for up to $250,000 of an estimated $304,000 project, of which there are two parts:

  • $55,000 to address deterioration and make upgrades to the fire training tower at the Emergency Operations Center in Swan Lake, which is used by the Bureau of Fire to teach local firefighters how to properly battle structure fires
  • $195,000 to build a pole barn on the same property, to be used for storage, as the Emergency Operations Center’s existing garage is at capacity

The County will contribute $54,000 worth of in-kind services (labor and materials) and has allocated such in the 2022 Budget.

“I’m very grateful to the State and our Assemblywoman for ensuring our first responders will remain up-to-date on their technical skills,” Sullivan County Public Safety Commissioner Thomas Farney said.

“I’m particularly pleased and impressed with the diligence and thoroughness our Grants Administrator Arthur Hussey and his team gave to this important initiative. Without their involvement, we would not be anticipating this much-needed overhaul and construction project,” Farney added. “I’m also grateful to our Fire Coordinator, John Hauschild, and our EMS Coordinator, Alex Rau, for the many hours of effort they put into the successful application for these funds.”

“John has taken our training to another level in Sullivan County, and this will help him take us even higher,” noted Legislature Chairman, Robert A. Doherty, in whose District 1 the facility sits. “We appreciate everything he does to keep our firefighters’ skills sharp.”
