Sullivan Catskills moves Travel Forward

LIBERTY — National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), the annual celebration of the contributions of the U.S. travel industry, will spotlight the essential role that travel will play in driving economic growth and innovation through the theme Travel Forward.

The Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association (SCVA) will celebrate NTTW, held this year from May 7-13, by holding a brochure exchange and BBQ on May 8 from 4-6:30 p.m. at the SCVA parking lot, 15 Sullivan Ave., Liberty, NY. Members from all over the county will come together at the Visitors Center for a tailgate-style brochure swap and meet fellow businesses from the community to distribute their information in one convenient location. Call the SCVA at 845-747-4449 to register.

“Travel is at the heart of the Sullivan Catskills,” remarked SCVA President/CEO Roberta Byron-Lockwood. “The tourism industry powers a strong local economy, creating jobs and strengthening our community’s culture and identity. We are a beautiful destination rich in culture and history that travelers all over the world flock to.”

“What sets the Sullivan Catskills apart from other beautiful regions in New York State is the camaraderie of the tourism owners and operators,” said Bethel Woods Center for the Arts CEO and SCVA Chairman Eric Frances. “The brochure swap is a reunion of sorts with members not just exchanging collateral but brainstorming on ways they can work together to continue elevating and growing tourism in the county.”

Established in 1983, NTTW is an annual tradition to mark the U.S. travel industry’s role in stimulating economic growth, cultivating vibrant communities, creating quality job opportunities, stimulating business activity, and elevating the quality of life for everyday Americans.

“The travel industry fuels every industry—our industry’s success is the nation’s success,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman. “This week is a prime opportunity to elevate the message that travel is essential to moving America’s economy forward.”

According to the most recent data from Tourism Economics, tourism in the Catskills region is a $1.6 billion industry, supporting 19,938 jobs. Were it not for tourism-generated state and local taxes, the average household in Sullivan County would have to pay an additional $2,407 to maintain the same level of government services.

“We are continuing to see our numbers rise, with more and more tourism-related businesses opening their doors in the past few months alone,” stated Byron-Lockwood. “It’s an exciting time and we look forward to a busy summer season.”
