SCCO is a Nesin Cultural Arts supported project. This program is made possible in part by funds from M&T Bank Charitable Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathleen Courtney Hochul and the NY State Legislature.

When Schubert composed the “Trout Quintet” in 1819, a piano quintet with violin, viola, cello, bass, and piano was experimental and hardly standard for composers. Hummel, Schubert’s predecessor, experimented with this format and Schubert’s quintet made this instrumentation a standard for the future. This newly formed quintet is, in many ways, the complete ensemble. With a complete set of strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass) and a piano, an ensemble can create a tonal picture using all the sounds and colors available to them in this instrument collective.

Inspired by a lieder (or song) of the same name, The Trout Quintet is a very sunny piece and depicts a larger version of the story used for the lieder. SCCO has added an extra element and will be performing a unique variation “Trout Remix” composed by Iranian-American composer Gity Razaz which will be inserted into Schubert’s Theme and Variation movement. Pay close attention in this movement to the bass player who transitions from an upright bass to an electric bass and back for the rest of the piece! The first half of the program will be a quintet composed by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, the first woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize for composition. Her quintet bears little resemblance to Schubert’s Quintet and the instrumentation and a brief quote in her second movement are really the only similarities between the two pieces. The double bass part is significantly more virtuosic compared to the Schubert with her goal to create a piece of chamber music to be performed among “equal partners.”
