Sullivan County NAACP and the Village of Monticello planning Juneteenth Parade and Celebration

SULLIVAN COUNTY - A Juneteenth parade and celebration for all of Sullivan County will take place on Saturday, June 18, to honor Black culture, heritage, and, most importantly, the emancipation of the last enslaved Black people. This is an event for all races, nationalities, and religions to join hands and truthfully acknowledge a period in history that shaped and continues to influence our society today.

Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it took two and a half years, until June 19, 1865, for many enslaved people in Texas to learn they were free. Thus began the celebration of Juneteenth as a holiday, beginning in Texas in the 1860’s. In 2021, Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday.

All residents of Sullivan County are invited to join in this important observance and celebration. Donations of your time, your talents or your financial sponsorship for this momentous event in our community are welcome.

Any who would like to participate in the parade are welcome. Some ideas include:

  • School Groups
  • Companies and employees with banners
  • Drummers
  • Youth/Toddler Groups
  • Church groups
  • Car/Motorcycle Clubs
  • Pet Clubs
  • Dance/Drill Teams
  • Floats
  • Women/Men Club
  • Community Organizations
  • Marching Bands
  • School Bands
