JEFFERSONVILLE — Sullivan West Central School District Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bressler discussed the district’s 2023-24 school budget proposal at the Callicoon Town Hall meeting on Monday.
Bressler said that they are working on making strategic decisions that are focused on the needs of the school community.
She also talked about getting approval for a school van to support their future driver’s education course for all students.
“I just feel that this is something all students can benefit from,” she said.
The district currently has a driver’s education course, but it is only during the summer which makes it tough to get available teachers.
The Superintendent said they had two vans last year but they both broke down, so they are looking for a replacement. She said that the school van will not only be used for driver’s education, but also for school trips, sporting events and more.
Bressler referenced the district looking to expand its career and technical education participation and the high school course electives they offer. She said this is important for preparing students for what’s after school and really stressed the need for students to learn how to support themselves.
“Our mission is for students to be engaged and passionate contributing members of their community,” Bressler said. “Our vision is to accomplish this by providing an experience rich with individualized opportunities at school.”
She said they are focused on making sure there is a pathway for students, whether that’s going to college or entering the job field. Bressler said that they are looking at course opportunities that would link to internships within the community.
“Speaking with the county manager, there are so many jobs available right now in our county and in our school district just waiting to be filled,” she said.
Bressler also said the school district is focused on continuing to improve the atmospheres in schools for the students. That includes continued support for the Pre-K to 12th Grade Social Emotional Programming and getting the lower classes prepared for middle school and high school earlier.
She said that they are offering the “Seal of Civic Readiness” to students who show a vast understanding of their civic values and responsibilities. This is earned by completing numerous projects and exams based on civics.
Bressler also said that they are offering additional art courses by changing the current part-time art position to a full-time art posion.
Residents of this school district will head to the polls on Tuesday, May 16, to vote on the budget. Polling places will be located at the Delaware Youth Center and the Tusten and Jeffersonville Public Libraries. The polls will be open from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
