LOCH SHELDRAKE -- The TV commercial says “Go With The General” and the truth was very evident last Sunday afternoon as the SUNY Sullivan Generals did the county honorably and brought home the NJCAA Region XV Division II Men's and Women's regional championships along with individual regional tournament, Region XV player of the year, tournament MVP and Region XV coach of the year.

The Lady Generals made easy work defeating the SUNY Orange Colts 90-37 while the Men's team took all the marbles home with a 77-66 victory over the SUNY Orange Colts.

Fans at the game commented that they really enjoyed the quality of Division II basketball now being played at SUNY Sullivan.

Playing Division II basketball also offers benefits to the athletes with basketball scholarships which then allows the college to go out and get quality athletes, and the quality of basketball offered last Sunday afternoon here in Sullivan County was nothing but top level sports.

Opening up the championship tournament Sunday afternoon at noon were the Women Generals and the SUNY Orange County Colts.

The opening minutes of this game revealed why the SUNY Sullivan team had a perfect 8-0 league season (26-2 overall) record which they quickly demonstrated by dominating the game from start to finish and walked away with a strong team effort winning by 53 points, 90-37, and advancing to the regional championships Saturday.

SUNY Sullivan Coach Derek Marchione, in his first season at Sullivan, noted in post game remarks, “we came out ready to play and turned them over from the start as get up and down quickly and press 94 deep for the whole game.”

“We are very athletic and it showed with this win,” Marchione said.

The Lady Generals opponents and tournament location will be released later this week.

Leading the scoring for the Generals was tournament MVP and Region XV Player of the Year Infinity Hammonds with 27 points off six treys, four two-pointers and one foul shot. Adrienne Graves added 21 points off nine two pointers and three foul shots. Heather Caroccia also added 20 points off seven deuces and three treys.

Candice McCutcheon led SUNY Orange with 13 points off two deuces and nine free throws.

The 2 p.m. men's game against the SUNY Orange Colts proved to be another story as the Colts played an upbeat tempo and led by as many as 10 points at the 12:13 mark with Sullivan starting to hit their tempo and Orange talking a one point 38-37 lead at halftime.

The Generals finally took control of the game at the 12:30 mark on the second half clock and sealed the game at the 3:57 mark with a 14-point lead 71-57 and then coasted to a 77-66 win.

Darius Lee led the Generals in scoring with 28 points off 11 two pointers and six foul shots.

Adding to the Generals total was Kendall Robinson with 18 points off seven deuces, one trey and one foul shot. Jasiah Lewis popped in five two pointers, one trey and and two foul shots.

Zayne Watson led SUNY Orange with 24 points off eight deuces and eight foul shots.

SUNY Sullivan posted a 7-1 region record prior to the championship game along with an overall record of 24-2.

SUNY Sullivan Men's Basketball Coach Brent Wilson, in his seventh season at Sullivan, noted in post game remarks, “We started out slowly and we knew it was going to be a battle and a type of grind it out game as they are very well-coached.”

“We weathered the storm and kept wearing them down and we tried to utilize our depth and we did a good job,” Wilson said.

The Generals Men's team will play a district championship game against Erie Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday at the SUNY Sullivan Paul Gerry Fieldhouse ... down in the Bunker.
