Today is Giving Tuesday. Many of us will make donations to charities or showcase our generosity in other ways.

Giving Tuesday has become a shining example of humanity’s finest qualities.
This comes days after Black Friday, which some would argue, showcases some of society’s less desirable traits.

While participation in Giving Tuesday is commendable, we implore you to be an example of the spirit of generosity on more than just one day a year.

Why, you ask? Because quite frankly there are so many people and organizations that need our help.

How many times have you had discussions with friends, family and loved ones, who read about food insecurity or victims of a natural disaster, and said, “That’s terrible” or “hopefully someone can help them” and left it at that?

The sentiment may be appreciated, but that alone does not help those suffering in those situations.

As author Simon Sinek says, “Words may inspire but only action creates change.”

If you have the means to give, please consider making donations to several different organizations. Every dollar counts.

But even if you aren’t strapped with cash, there are other ways to embody the spirit of giving, such as volunteering your time.

There are many organizations that need manpower. Consider signing up to work a shift feeding the homeless, spend a day delivering meals to our neighbors in need, become an angel and help those battling addiction, and so on. There’s also a significant need for foster parents in our area.

Tackling big problems can seem daunting. But simply acknowledging them won’t get us anywhere.

We have to act.

Sometimes that means skipping a day of retail therapy (for those of us who are fortunate to have that luxury) or missing the big game on TV. Giving back might, at times, seem like an inconvenience. But it has its own rewards. And as we’ve discussed there are multiple ways to give back.

Don’t simply speak with your words, but also with your actions.

The following quote by Anne Frank sums things up pretty well: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
