GOSHEN – In the multi-dimensional world of a track and field meet, most of the events take place on the track, which is where you will find most of the onlookers. Oftentimes high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault are within sight distance as well. But the throwing events are removed from the main nexus of action.

Safety requires a cage for the discus which contains a throwing circle. Shot put, with a circle of its own, is located in yet another place. As a result, the amazing feats of strength and grace of the throwers are often not seen by many, though the points accrued therein count, as do the ones acquired on the track or at other field events.

For photographers shooting pictures at a track meet, a track meet is akin to a three-ring circus and requires moving around from place to place in order to get shots of the athletes involved in the various venues. Knowing when events are taking place and who to watch for are prerequisites to comprehensive coverage.

But once a year, it’s all about the throwers who have the day to themselves at the annual OCIAA Throwers Pentathlon. Divided into two groups each of boys and girls, the throwers rotate across the fine facilities of Goshen Coliseum to register their three tries at shot put, discus, javelin, weight throw and hammer throw. Points are accrued based on places in each event to determine the final standing.

For most of the athletes, the agenda is less about winning than personal progress; chances to marshal personal record (PR’s) in one or more of the events. Many are novices at some of the events having specialized primarily in discus and shot put, which are events at all meets.

With 17 schools on hand, 28 girls and 33 boys took their turns with the various implements. Athletes competed from Sullivan County schools including Tri-Valley, Sullivan West, Liberty and Fallsburg. They comprised 15 of the 61 competitors, or roughly one fourth of the day’s throwers.

Tri-Valley’s Talan Scanna took first in the javelin and fourth in the discus. Scanna has been exceptional in the javelin. This was not his first gold medal performance in the event this spring.

T-V’s Armaan Butler was first in the hammer throw, his specialty and the event he will be competing in at University of Rochester in the fall where he will be majoring in chemical engineering. Butler was fourth in the weight throw.

The weight was 35 pounds, unlike the 20-pound weight some of the athletes had used this spring. On his first throw, the weight landed very close to the sector border line. Being a good sport, Butler asked the officials to record it as a foul but they counted it. His third throw was his best. He was fifth in the shot put. Sullivan West’s Dillan Hanslmaier took fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

Overall, in the meet, Butler finished third with 2,355 points. Scanna was seventh with 2,180 and Hanslmaier was 10th with 1,922.
