Summer ushers in many amazing local traditions. This includes various fairs and festivals that provide opportunities for family fun and for memories to be made that will last a lifetime.

On that note, it was encouraging to see Broadway in Monticello full of people for the Bagel Festival, organized by the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce, on Sunday. Coverage and photos of the annual event can be found in today’s paper.

With some of the recent news in Monticello, from financial struggles faced by the village that are only becoming exacerbated after being dropped from their insurance and having to pay almost a half a million more annually, to the recent “massive police response,” due to “incidents of gunfire,” it was nice to see something positive happening in our County seat.

There are a lot of great citizens and local businesses in the Village of Monticello, and we hope for more weekends like the one that passed, where the good isn’t overshadowed by the bad.

There is tons more fun to be had this weekend as well, as locals have the choice of not one but two fairs. The Delaware County Fair continues today and tomorrow, and the Little World’s Fair in Grahamsville is happening all weekend long.

Please consider attending these events and supporting the many volunteers who make it happen, as well as local businesses and vendors in attendance.

Creative Corner

Sullivan County is home to many talented artists and creative thinkers. We also have many great arts organizations.

In hopes of highlighting the area’s vibrant arts community, we will soon be starting a Creative Corner, which will run in the paper periodically.

If you have a photo of a piece of art you created and/or a short poem or creative writing piece to share (that’s 300 words or less), email it to Managing Editor Joe Abraham at joe@sc-democrat.com.

Please include the name of the piece, and if it is a photo of a piece of art being sent, the inclusion of a brief description describing it would be much appreciated.
