Thomas Joseph Berg (71), a local contractor, passed away on Thursday, Feb 20, 2025 at Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown with family by his side.

He was predeceased by his mother, Frances (Taylor) Berg, and father, George Berg. Tom is survived by his wife, Peg; children Lauren (partner Geremy), Michael (grandchildren Clinton and Riley), Ali, and Jason; brother Philip of Amagansett and sister Elizabeth of East Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

Tom was born in Brooklyn on June 29, 1953 and spent his formative years on Long Island in Malverne and Montauk. He met Peg on Christmas in 1975 and spent the next 50 years single-handedly building a house and stone barn in Sullivan County while being a model parent to his four children.

He graduated from Sullivan CCC with a degree in Civil Engineering and was a licensed land surveyor. He was a dedicated self-employed contractor (Thomas Building) and spent his life building houses with skill and integrity. Tom was an expert in furniture building, plumbing, electrical, and masonry. He built his own solar panels in 1978 and served for over 20 years on the Forestburgh Planning Board.

Tom was a classic car enthusiast, never missing the annual Rhinebeck Car Show in Dutchess County. He could identify the make, model and year of almost any car by minor details such as the shape of headlights and windshield. He was the sole mechanic for all of his trucks and motorcycles. Tom never owned a cell phone but was an expert at Spider Solitaire.

He was an accomplished skier, surfer, and Hobie Cat sailor and operated his own sawmill. Tom always made time to help family and friends with projects and emergencies.

The Bergs extend their heartfelt thanks to the friends and family who offered their support during this difficult time. The family is grateful for the dedicated staff at Garnet Health Medical Center and their recent compassionate care and dedication.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Port Jervis Humane Society.
