At the end of each year, we think ahead and wish for better things to come. We may not have control over much of what we want, but we are hopeful. Most of us know that good health is at the top of the list, but housing and food are right up there, too. We wish these things for the people we care about and we head into 2022 with some confidence, but also with some worries. We have been walloped with COVID-19 and its variants for almost two full years and the toll on our families and friends has been great.

Other things, too, have affected all of us as Sullivan County residents. Our current Legislature (nine people representing nine geographical districts) has made many decisions that were misguided and have negatively affected the services and the finances of our county. To name a few: the hiring of Michael McGuire as County Attorney when the NYS Commission on Judicial Conduct had recommended his removal from the bench; the sale/lease of the Care Center at Sunset Lake; the diminished contract with the Sullivan County Visitors Association; and the use of $7 million dollars in ARPA funding (intended for COVID-19-related public health emergencies and services) for road repaving and boilers/heating. In addition, meetings have included bullying and unprofessional language -- both intolerable.

The Legislature needs a change in leadership because the current chairman has caused two years of chaos. On January 4, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. the Legislature will hold an organizational meeting to vote on the chairmanship for the next two years. It is time for the Legislature to choose a new chairman. To voice your concern, please call the Legislative Offices at (845) 807-0435.

All best wishes to everyone for a Happy New Year filled with good health and peace of mind.
