Resilient. If we could only pick one word to describe the Class of 2020 we feel this is the one. Attorney and author Elizabeth Edwards once said, “Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it's less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that's good.”

For all of us the first half of 2020 has been about accepting this new reality. For seniors, this was not the end of the high school journey you had expected. No proms or traditional ceremonies.

However, you, your parents and the faculty and administration of regional school districts have done a phenomenal job making the best of this new reality.

Local districts have found creative ways to make sure the Class of 2020 gets their well-deserved recognition. And for that we applaud them.

Members of the Class of 2020, you are headed out into the world at a very challenging and divisive time.

As society works to pick up the pieces following the devastation of COVID-19, both in the loved ones lost and damage to the economy, things will not be easy.

This is especially true when politically our nation couldn't be further apart, oftentimes working against one another, instead of working together.

In addition to that, there is also great unrest and outrage in our country following the murder of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others. Although some believed our society was winning the battle against racism, it is clear we are not.

With all of those obstacles mentioned, it'd be understandable why you might feel like the future is bleak.

But we're here to tell you that isn't the case. And why you are the reason why there's hope.

Our country has faced challenges before, whether it was the coming out of the 1918 Flu pandemic, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, etc. The end result is that we rebound because of our resilience.

As has always been the case, once again it will take a new generation of leaders to lead us forward.

And our challenge to you is to step up and be those leaders.

While the pressure is a lot to handle, we know from our time covering your accomplishments, as well as hearing your teachers and peers praise you, that you can do it.

And don't worry, you will not be alone. We will be there to follow your lead.
