SULLIVAN COUNTY — The Sullivan County Long Beards (SCLB) hosted their annual “JAKES” youth buck contest over the Columbus Day weekend. Todd Walter of Narrowsburg took first place with a buck that scored 233.75 points. Walter chose the shoulder mount prize donated by Dianne Bacon of Shewolf Taxidermy.
Jeffersonville’s Luke Chevalier finished in second place with a buck scoring a total of 230 points, and will receive a gift certificate to Fur Fin & Feather.
There were 11 bucks taken and brought to official scoring locations to be weighed and measured. The scoring system used is the Democrat measure of the rack plus the weight of the deer. As in the past, several of the youth were first time hunters, all taking respectable bucks.
“The SCLB would like to thank the mentors for their time and effort taking the youth afield for this experience and the scoring stations for their participation. This program would not exist without all of you. This supports our goals of Healthy Habitat, Healthy Harvest, and our “JAKES” program (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge Ethics and Sportsmanship).”
Bucks harvested over the weekend were measured at four stores: Sportsmen’s Den, Neversink General Store, Fur Fin & Feather and Shewolf Taxidermy.
