MONTICELLO — Billowing smoke coming out of the structure at 48 Jefferson Street in Monticello at 11:47 a.m. Sunday morning spurred mass response from emergency agencies around the county.
Monticello Fire Department Chief Jose Mora said in a statement that there were two minor injuries sustained due to the blaze. One victim was transported to the local hospital and the other was treated on scene.
“This was a very difficult fire,” Chief Mora said, “and there will be residual smoke until the building is torn down.”
Joining Monticello either on standby or on scene were the fire departments of Rock Hill, Liberty, Hurleyville, Forestburgh, White Lake, Kauneonga Lake, Fallsburg, Lake Huntington, Woodridge, Wurtsboro, Swan Lake, Grahamsville, Hortonville, Smallwood/Mongaup Valley, Port Jervis, Circleville, Livingston Manor, Lock Sheldrake, Lumberland and Jeffersonville. EMS included Rock Hill and SeniorCare’s fly cars.
Also involved were Sullivan County Fire Coordinators, Sullivan County Fire Investigators, Orange County Coordinator, the county Sheriff’s Office and drone team, Monticello Police Department, Monticello Fire Department Auxiliary and the Monticello Water Department. The fire is under investigation by the Sullivan County Bureau of Fire.
