Walls still pitching at age 69

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS – Veteran softball pitcher Joanne Walls would have liked to use her pitching talents last Thursday evening against L&B Tack, leaders of the “A” Division of the Sullivan County Women’s Softball League with a perfect 10-0 record.

But Mother Nature won this match with steady rain that resulted in the game being canceled and rescheduled for July 21 at the Firemen’s Park diamond, in White Sulphur Springs.

The Angels, with a record of 9-4, had competed last Wednesday night at White Sulphur, defeating a young but steadily improving D&D Contracting team, 19-9.

The winning pitcher was Walls, whose familiar nickname is “Jo.”

Walls also coaches Charlie’s Angels, and has been playing in this league since 1974.

Following her team’s win Wednesday night, she said they were looking forward to the L&B Tack game and that “whoever has their hitting attack on that night will win.”

Charlie’s Angels were the last team to defeat L&B in the 2020 season and that win resulted in the league championship… something every- one knows is L&B’s goal.

Regarding this year’s team compared to the one that won the 2020 league championship Walls noted, “We have several new players and this requires everyone getting to know each other and putting it all together for a winning combination.”

Walls, who celebrated her 69th birthday last Thursday, surely would have liked pitching on her birthday against their arch rivals, L&B Tack.

The popular softball player enjoys the competition, and like many athletes with a desire to compete, she will perform her skills as long as her health allows.

On June 1, 2018 Walls retired after 40 years with Liberty ShopRite.

Charlie’s Angels also enjoyed visiting with a surprise guest at Wednesday’s game when one of their former outstanding players, Shannon (Dietrich) Suarez, showed up with her two-year-old son, Easton.
Shannon was an outstanding athlete at Monticello Central and was one of the most dangerous hitters to play with Charlie’s Angels several years ago.

Ms. Suarez lives with her husband and son in Cartersville, GA. where Shannon is a Physical Education (PE) Teacher at the Cartersville Elementary School.
