Wash. Mask. Zoom. Repeat.

Okay now, folks, it's been 15 weeks since we started staying in our homes, and it is getting more difficult to remember what life was like before Covid-19. But this new life hasn't been totally depressing. Covid-19 has taught us many things.

Before Covid-19, we didn't know how to properly wash our hands. Oh, we had heard the “sing Happy Birthday twice” directions before, but after watching way too many videos on hand-washing, we are finally able to get our hands clean enough to gain admission to any operating room at a major hospital. Not bragging. It's a simple fact. Our hands are actually clinically clean.

We have also learned how to use Zoom, an app that allows you to hold meetings or virtual cocktail hours with friends and family. Word is that the guy who invented it had no idea that it would become so popular and never expected the world to be using it every day, so he has been playing catch-up to make the app more secure. But it's great fun and essential for many schools, businesses, and the occasional wedding or graduation.

Another handy skill we've acquired is wearing a mask. You may think this isn't worth mentioning, but it is remarkable how quickly we got used to the idea of wearing a mask when we're in public. (I also love how it hides my jowls.)

Oh, and I've also found a great online shop on Etsy for buying masks. They arrive quickly and are always well-made. The shop is called “Smile with Your Mask.”

We've also learned how to be socially distant. We automatically stay away from others, except for those folks with whom we're living. We have learned how to treat the world as though it is a giant Petri dish, just filled with viruses looking for a host. We need some space, man.

Finally, we have learned how to appreciate the little things in life. A walk in the neighborhood with the pups. A conversation with a neighbor. A beautiful sunset. Life is on pause and we have time to smell the roses. Or at least to weed, water, and feed them. It's been a good year for gardens.

So let's be thankful for the many skills we have gained during this time: How to truly wash our hands. How to shop for and purchase cute masks. How to stay apart while staying together. How to Zoom.

These are wild times, but just think of our expanding skill sets!
