Week 8 to feature more marquee matchups

SULLIVAN COUNTY — Last weekend rounded out the divisional matchups for the 8-Man division, with Sullivan West and Tri-Valley earning wins over Livingston Manor and Eldred respectively. The Bulldogs, Bears and Yellowjackets will all be back in action this weekend in non-league games as the three jockey for positioning in the standings.

Monticello, Liberty and Fallsburg are still competing in the 11-Man divisions, with Monticello earning a big win over Chester to get to 3-4 on the season. As we near the conclusion of the regular season, let’s take a look at this weekend’s upcoming matchups.

 Friday Night Lights

Spackenkill at Fallsburg, 6 p.m.

Fallsburg will be taking on Spackenkill tonight as the Comets are still looking for their first win since returning to 11-Man. The Spartans, who made their way back to 11-Man last year, are off to a 5-2 start to the season.

The Spartans have kept games close, playing to a point differential of just +21 through their first seven games. Fallsburg, on the other hand, has been outscored 42 to 139 this season. It will be a tough matchup for Fallsburg, but the Comets still have talent and depth, they just need to adjust to the different style of play in 11-Man football.

Sullivan West at Millbrook, 6:30 p.m.

With back-to-back 30-point victories, the Bulldogs will look to stay hot as they take on the Mustangs. The combined unit of Millbrook and Webutuck is off to a 2-4 start to the season, which included a forfeit win over Livingston Manor in Week 2. Since then, Millbrook has dropped four straight, most recently a 28-22 loss against Onteora.

This game should be a great opportunity for Sullivan West to get one final tune-up as they prepare for the postseason.

 Eldred at Pawling, 7 p.m.

The Yellowjackets have run the gauntlet this season, facing a slew of playoff-caliber teams and, until last week, coming out unscathed. Eldred finally felt the sting of their first loss last week in a close matchup against Tri-Valley, in which Eldred debuted their new turf field and sports complex.

Now, in the final week of the regular season, the Bulldogs will be on the road again as they take on last year’s championship runner-up: The Pawling Tigers.

Pawling has sped off to a 6-1 record in the regular season, their only loss also coming to Tri-Valley. Eldred, who is looking to get healthy before the playoffs, will have their hands full against a Tigers squad that is coming off a 50-20 victory over Ellenville last weekend.

 Saturday Showcase

Monticello at Highland, 1 p.m.

The Panthers are coming off a big win over Chester/Seward last weekend, and will look to stay hot as they take on a 5-2 Highland squad. At 3-4 on the season, Monticello will look to get to .500 this weekend against the Huskies, who are currently sitting at first place in their division.

Highland is coming off a 34-29 defeat at the hands of New Paltz, and Monticello will look to keep their momentum going this weekend and string two wins together like they did earlier this season against Liberty and O’Neill.

Highland has outscored opponents by nearly 100 points this season, so Monticello’s defense will have a tall task ahead of them as they vie for their second consecutive win on the road tomorrow.

 Dover at Liberty, 1 p.m.

Liberty had a tough time against Beacon last weekend, losing 58-0 on the road. It marked the sixth consecutive loss for the Redhawks after their season-opening victory against Fallsburg.

Dover is coming into the game at 2-5, similar to Fallsburg in that they are struggling in the adjustment back to 11-Man football. The Dragons, however, brought home a win over O’Neill last weekend and will look to keep their momentum going as they make their way to Liberty tomorrow.

The Redhawks will look to end their regular season on a high note, but the Dragons will likely be looking to do the same thing, making it a tough matchup for both teams.

 Pine Plains at Tri-Valley, 1 p.m.

The bombers are coming into this game with a 2-3 record, including back-to-back wins over Onteora and Millbrook. Tri-Valley, on the other hand, has rattled off four consecutive wins, including taking down two undefeated teams in their last two games. The Bears are one of the hottest teams in 8-Man football right now, with their defense keeping opponents under 20 points in nearly each game this season aside from their week two loss at Sullivan West.

Tri-Valley will look to keep their momentum going as they speed towards the postseason, with tomorrow’s game being a great opportunity for a final week tune-up.
