Weekend celebrations

The official first day of fall is this Thursday, September 22. If you’re paying careful attention, you can already sense the days getting shorter. We can already begin to see some of the leaves changing their color, and we can feel the crisp coolness of the morning air.

If this is the last weekend of summer, there is certainly plenty to do and celebrate in the Sullivan Catskills. First of all, Saturday is the Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association’s (SCVFA) 93rd annual Firefighter’s parade. Fire departments, ambulance companies and law enforcement agencies will join together in a grand procession down State Route 17B in White Lake. Lineup begins at noon with the parade kicking off at 1 p.m. As a good way to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall, festivities will continue after the parade at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts Harvest Festival site.

That’s not the only event drawing crowds in Sullivan County this weekend. The Jeff Jamboree kicks off Saturday as well. The streets of Jeffersonville will buzz with excitement as this annual event returns to showcase community spirit. The First Presbyterian Church will host a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. The Jeff Jamboree features many vendors, free horse drawn carriage rides, a library card signup at the Western Sullivan Public Library, a tractor parade at noon and much more!

This Sunday the Harvest Festival continues at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. As it does every August and September for six consecutive weeks, the annual Harvest Festival showcases the hard work of farmers and skilled talent of artisans, as well as offering great food, live music and craft beers. This week’s live entertainment on the Festival Stage will feature the Delaware Valley Raptors from noon until 1:30 p.m. and The Other Band starting at 2 p.m.

The changing of the seasons is a special time to behold. We encourage everyone to be safe, have fun and support our local events.
