Weighing-in on waste

SULLIVAN COUNTY ––In recent months, the topic of solid waste has been discussed at length, given the coming closure of Seneca Meadows Landfill, where the County exports a large percentage of its waste.

The County currently ships solid waste upstate at $95 per ton, which Legislative Chairman Rob Doherty stated totals about $16 million per year.

It was also noted that the cost is expected to be $300 per ton in Sullivan, Orange and Westchester counties within five years, bringing the annual tab to at least $48 million.

Hughes Energy has presented a possible research and development project at the County Landfill on two separate occasions, which was met with public pushback. The Legislature has yet to decide whether or not to move forward with it.

Doherty has also mentioned establishing a committee to look at solving the long-term solid waste issues.

The discussion will continue next month as legislators have set a public hearing for Thursday, February 16 at 10:45 a.m. to allow the public to further weigh in on the matter. It will take place in the Legislative Hearing Room in the Government Center in Monticello.
