Youth mental health first aid

LIBERTY — Sullivan 180 is now offering Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainings to individuals over the age of 18. Training is available by request in the community and in schools. The next training opportunity is May 19th at Sullivan BOCES targeting school staff.

Youth Mental Health First Aid was created to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), and eating disorders.

“One in five youth will experience a mental health challenge at some point in their life,” said Cortney Larson, Empowering a Healthier Generation Coordinator at Sullivan 180. “Providing lifechanging tools to better support our youth is a huge step forward in changing the stigma around mental health. Adults who can effectively support youth through mental health challenges will have a lasting impact on their future.”
