SULLIVAN COUNTY – The Sullivan County Long Beards, NYS Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Foundation (NWTF), once again sponsored their annual Youth Turkey Hunt (contest) on the weekend of April 22 and 23. These dates are set aside by our Department of Environmental Conservation to give our youth, years 12-15 an opportunity to hunt turkeys prior to the regular season. It is a great chance for youth to be afield alongside a mentor with the emphasis being on the hunt.
In total, nine turkeys were recognized for the contest, a few were returning hunters, others first timers. The participants ranged in age from 12-15 and all were hunting in various locations in Sullivan County. The scores ranged from 34 to 65.125, all very respectable turkeys.
The contest entries were weighed and measured at Fur Fin and Feather Sport shop in Livingston Manor and The Sportsmens Den in Callicoon. Birds were scored by the NWTF’s official system; weight plus two-times the total beard length plus 10-times each spur length.
First place: Abby O’Brien 65.125
Second place: Arianna Kautz 61.436
Other birds entered by: Maxwell Blumenthal of Callicoon, Todd Walter of Narrowsburg NY, Shelby Stephenson of Neversink NY, Hunter Yager of Grahamsville NY, Garnet Kurpil of Roscoe NY, Tyler Brockner of North Branch NY, Gene Fancher of Parksville NY.
Congratulations to the youth that harvested a bird and good luck to all our fellow hunters this May.
We would like to Thank Fur Fin and Feather and The Sportsmens Den for the use of their facility and participation, along with chapter members Butch, Carola and the Deihl family for scoring the birds.
Most of all, thanks to all those that take the time to introduce youth to the joys and frustration of turkey hunting. Please continue to preserve our hunting heritage and the goals of the NWTF. Pass it on.
