All About Ruth

I am now 91 years old and tell people that I intend to live to 100. I recently wrote to my former high school gym teacher who taught in Jeffersonville. Ruth (Gingrich) Devlin will be 101 on January 15th. Ruth was so much fun. She was like one of us kids. She allowed us to ride in the trunk of her convertible. I was once picked to be the one to knock on a door of a house on the road between Callicoon Center and Roscoe and see if the people who lived there would give us water for the over-heated radiator of Ruth’s car. When I asked them if we could “borrow” some water, Ruth cracked up laughing, and asked me if I planned to return it.

In our correspondence this year, Ruth and her daughter sent me a photo of Ruth that had been taken when she was about 85. It is a photo of her in an indoor pool. In a prior letter, several years ago, she had written that she was doing well after a stroke she had. At that time, she was swimming every day. Ruth and two of her daughters once attended a class reunion we had at Lanza’s in Shandelee. At that time, she had a vacation home in Pennsylvania, and she invited me to visit there for a few days, but I never got a chance to do that. A good lesson to not put things off if you can help it. On that note, I wish good health and a happy new year to everyone!
