MONGAUP VALLEY – Splitting a three-game series 1 to 1 leaves too much to chance and the Bat Girls didn’t want to take any. They took the series in two games over L & B Tack last Tuesday evening. It was a very close, hard-fought battle in every inning.
Alycia Bellido of the Bat Girls cracked a double on the opening hit of the game and slid into second base easily, eluding the defense. Her [Bellido’s] teammate, Kat Kehlenbeck, tapped a line drive into right field that was quickly recovered by L& B’s Holli D’Angelo. The stands were packed that night with family and friends. Players from other teams attended to support their fellow athletes.
But on the field, it was a war of the wills and in the end Bat Girls came away with a slim 16-15 win over L & B. Both teams traded hit for hit at the plate and showed strong defense in the field. Key players in the victory for the Bat Girls were Jenna Carmody, Nicole Kothe, Alycia Bellido and Kat Kehlenbeck. Lindsey Rau, Alex Stant and Alaina Gaughan played effectively all season.
You can’t deny the dedication of these athletes. Many of them are mothers, working full-time, and trying to juggle their other responsibilities on top of managing their softball team’s schedule. The Sullivan County Women’s Softball League season begins in May and runs through August.
