One day while admiring a beautiful flower garden, I thought about how this beauty didn’t just happen on its own. There were unseen hands working behind the scenes to bring it about. A gardener had worked hard to prepare the soil, pull out weeds and grasses, and plant the seeds and bulbs. Then she continued to nurture it as it grew. She watered, fertilized and pulled more weeds.
After the gardener had done her part, God continued the work. He provided the sunshine and rain to further water the plants. He protected them and caused them to grow and bloom so we could enjoy the beauty of that garden.
I thought about how many other things we enjoy in life that have been done by unseen hands working behind the scenes. I’m always so grateful for janitors and housekeepers who clean public restrooms, and hospital and hotel rooms, and for trash collectors who take away all our garbage.
Where would we be without farmers who grow and raise our food? We are thankful for cooks and chefs and bakers who work behind the scenes so we can enjoy delicious meals.
We may not think about all the construction workers it takes to build our homes, streets, buildings, bridges and communities. Much work behind the scenes goes into hauling the raw materials, preparing the areas, and doing the actual building.
There are all the factory workers building and assembling the many products we use each day to make our lives easier. Someone built the furniture we use, the cars we drive, and appliances we need, and then the many truck drivers who delivered it all.
We need teachers working tirelessly to impart wisdom and knowledge to students who then go on to work behind the scenes. We are thankful for inventors, laboratory workers, pilots, doctors, nurses, and so many other professions.
We are grateful for those who serve unseen in law enforcement and the military, fighting battles to keep us safe. We need those working behind the scenes in our prisons and rehabs.
There are not many areas in our lives where we don’t stop to think about where we would be and how we would survive without all those who work diligently behind the scenes to provide us with so much we need in this life.
We are thankful for all these ones, but we cannot stop there in our thanksgiving. For there is our great God who works even harder behind the scenes to give us all we need for life and godliness. He is the one who gives the knowledge, the strength, the creativity, and the skill for each one to do the work they do. He has provided the raw materials – the wood and stone, the soil and seed, the animals and all that’s needed for the workers.
But probably the greatest way we can partner with God to work behind the scenes is through our prayers. As we see all the pain and sorrows so many are struggling with, and all the situations that look so hopeless, we can lift our prayers to our heavenly Father and know that He is faithful to continue the unseen work of answering our prayers and meeting the needs.
So do not become weary in prayer when you do not see immediate results. Remember that impossible is where God starts, and miracles are what He does. Nothing is impossible for our God.
