Billy Strings brings two nights of bluegrass to Bethel

Billy Strings and his band arrived this past weekend with two nights at Bethel Woods and two completely unique performances, proving why they’ve become one of the most exciting live bluegrass acts on tour.

While Strings’ impressive guitar playing remains the obvious draw, what continues to separate this band is its collective chemistry. Banjo player Billy Failing, mandolinist Jarrod Walker, bassist Royal Masat, and fiddler Alex Hargreaves don’t simply accompany Strings. They anticipate every turn and create the kind of musical conversation that can only happen between musicians who know and trust one another.

The weekend’s setlists offered a great mix of fan favorites, newer originals, and bluegrass classics. Friday got off to a strong start with “The Fire on My Tongue” and “Must Be Seven,” setting the tone for the night. The show closed with an extended “Meet Me at the Creek,” giving the band plenty of room to showcase their improvisational skills.

Saturday offered a completely different setlist. “Pyramid Country” stretched into an early jam, while “Secrets” and “Doin’ Things Right” showed why Billy’s original songs continue to connect with fans. The night’s defining performance was a cover version of Jerry Garcia & David Grisman’s “Arabia.” A powerful rendition of The Moody Blue’s “Nights in White Satin” added another memorable moment before “Turmoil & Tinfoil” brought the weekend to a strong close.

What made these performances stand out wasn’t just the technical skill but the band’s willingness to let the music develop naturally. Solos came out of the flow of the performance, and each member contributed without overpowering the group. In a live music landscape where many shows feel predictable, Billy Strings and his band continue to show the value of in-the-moment playing.

By the end of the weekend, one thing was unmistakable: Billy Strings is not just carrying bluegrass traditions forward. He’s building a body of original work and covers to complement those pieces that are defining the next generation of American roots music.
