Checking under the hood

How did I spend this beautiful summer day, you ask?  In very productive ways, I reply.

I took my car to the garage for its 90,000-mile checkup.  I picked up some yogurt at the store.  I watered my gardens.

Oh, and I prepped for my colonoscopy.  Lots of unpleasant drinking, and endless trips to the loo. What joy!

Tomorrow my son will pick me up and deliver me to the doctor for my procedure.  The prep is definitely not my favorite thing, but it is important to have regular colonoscopies, and I am happy to do so.

As we get older, we find that there is lots of “patch and repair,” as my father-in-law used to say.  We have our cataracts removed.  We may have knees or shoulders replaced.  We let dermatologists look us over and take care of any spots that look suspicious.

We find ourselves filling up weekly pill containers so we can keep track of our medicines.  No more “did I take my pills this morning?”  We are learning to cope with the joys of aging.

The hair gets thinner, the eyes get dimmer.  The waist gets wider and the memory gets wilder.  We ask to move tables in a restaurant when the air conditioner is blowing on us.  We also like to sit by a window when we’re out for lunch so there’s light enough to read the menu.  At night, you might be blinded as we use the flashlight on our phone to read the menu.

We also watch TV with the closed captioning on all the time.  This is to avoid having to turn on the sound so high that the neighbors could hear it.  This is not to say that our hearing is shot.  We just like saying “what?” alot. Plus people talk so fast these days that it’s hard to keep up.

So don’t mind me. I’m just sitting here between runs and ruminating on the joys of aging.  I’m not complaining.  I am merely ruminating.  I know I am a very lucky woman.  Just need to keep that motor humming.
