GRAHAMSVILLE — Chester Academy wasted little time taking control of Tuesday afternoon’s varsity boys soccer matchup, scoring twice in the opening two minutes on its way to a 4-0 victory over Tri-Valley.
The Bears, who entered the game with a 0-10-1 record, hosted Chester (9-2) at Tri-Valley Secondary School for Senior Recognition Night, honoring four graduating players.
Chester’s offense came out strong, finding the back of the net almost immediately after kickoff. A second goal followed with 38:12 remaining in the first half, putting Tri-Valley at a two-goal disadvantage before the game had settled into a rhythm.
Chester continued to control possession and pressure the Bears’ defense, adding a third goal with approximately 20 minutes remaining in the half. Matthew Thonus scored Chester’s fourth with about eight and a half minutes left before halftime.
Tri-Valley senior goalkeeper David Hermann faced repeated scoring opportunities throughout the first half, making several stops despite Chester’s early advantage. Playing on Senior Recognition Night, Hermann remained busy in goal as Chester pressed its advantage.
The Bears had opportunities of their own, including a first half shot that struck the crossbar but failed to find the net.
Tri-Valley showed improvement after halftime, maintaining possession for longer stretches and holding Chester scoreless through the remainder of the game.
The Bears also had an opportunity to break the shutout late in the second half when freshman Tsimafei Lazerka stepped up for a penalty kick. The attempt failed to produce a goal, preserving Chester’s 4-0 lead.
Despite the loss, Tuesday’s game offered an opportunity to recognize Tri-Valley’s four seniors: Jonathan Conjura, David Hermann, John Mingo and Jacob Van Etten.
