LIBERTY –– On Monday night the Liberty Red Hawks girl's basketball team hosted the Chester Hambletonian’s. In an exciting contest that saw the Red Hawks come back from a deficit of 12 points after the half, the two teams fought hard until the last buzzer sounded. Liberty and Chester both struggled to score early on in the game, but the Red Hawks managed to find a small lead in the opening minutes.
With some slick ball movement from the Hambletonians, they would go on an 8-0 run with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. In a great performance at the center position for the Red Hawks, Haylee Gomez understood the assignment, consistently drawing the foul under the basket throughout the night. Gomez was the top scorer for the Red Hawks with 12 points. She was one of three Red Hawk players to finish the night in double digits.
The Red Hawks turned up the intensity to start the second quarter. They were down by six at the opening whistle. Liberty Guard Giselle Payton collected three steals on the next few Chester possessions, but Chester would answer sinking 2 straight three’s slowly trying to pull away from the Red Hawks. At the half, the Hambletonians would hold a 21-9 lead.
Chester capitalized on several Red Hawk turnovers at the start of the third quarter. After a timeout, the Red Hawks scored back-to-back buckets fueling a seven-point run. Arianna Wilson of the Red Hawks had the hot hand as the final quarter drew to a close. Wilson doubled down in the paint to bring the Red Hawks within five. An injury for Chester, paused the game for a few moments but at the whistle, both teams were back in action.
The Red Hawks fought hard until the closing seconds of the game making the final quarter a fierce contest of will. When the final buzzer sounded it would be the Hambletonians to come out on top winning the game 32-28 over the home team.
Five players from Chester scored in the double digits including Stephanie Clarke, Annie Rusich, and Brooke Battiatio. Arianna Wilson joined Haylee Gomez and Julissa Velez as Liberty’s top 3 scorers. After the game Liberty Coach Levar Hamilton said, “The ladies played great, they didn’t give up, they pushed to make that come back and we were in it today.”
Liberty drops to 2-5 with this loss.
