Students from Eldred Junior-Senior High School and George Ross Mackenzie Elementary School are facing off to see who can get the most non-perishable food items to donate for the food drive “Souper Bowl.”
Between now and February 5 they will be collecting soups, canned items, and non-perishable items at holiday concerts and basketball games to donate to local food pantries.
Leading the initiative is the Student Council, who also brought it to the Sullivan County Student Council in hopes that other schools will join the initiative in their hope to help with food insecurity in the county.
“Every can counts; together, we can fill bowls and hearts in our community,” said high school student Marissa Gochenour, Co-President of the Student Council.
Her co-president, Tabitha Smith, agrees. “We want to give back to the community because they do so much for us,” she said.
Anyone can donate, and items can be dropped off in the alcove of the school building. For more information, contact Student Advisor Lisa Marie Drewett at 845-456-1100 ext. 5142.
