In recent years, the state of Journalism has severely diminished due to political partisanship, financial influences and just plain ignorance. Often, it’s difficult to discern truth and facts and many news outlets rarely provide clear reporting and analysis.

Therefore, the Sullivan County Democrat should be commended for owning up to a mistake which, to be fair, seems to be an honest misunderstanding. Not only did the newspaper print an apology and explanation in its editorial but you also published the letter from Forestburgh Supervisor Dan Hogue who provided a clear understanding of the town’s legal proceedings. One rarely sees similar behavior from other news services so the Democrat’s actions are even more impressive!

This acknowledgment deepens the Democrat’s dedication to good journalism and buttresses the paper’s reliability and credibility. We all make mistakes but it takes bravery to admit one’s own failings.

To the paper I say, “Well done. Keep up the excellent work.”
