Flag Day presentation at Sullivan West Elementary School, Jeffersonville

JEFFERSONVILLE – Amber Sullivan, President Allan Milk Memorial Auxiliary to VFW Post 7276 Long Eddy and Sandra Flynn, Past Department of New York President and member of H. Russell Kenyon Auxiliary to VFW Post 5808 presented a program to 78 kindergarten students at the Sullivan West Elementary School in Jeffersonville on Monday, June 16.

They spoke to the students about the origin of the United States Flag, read a story about Flag Day, asked questions about the flag and recognized students whose families had past and current members of the military.  At the end, all stood, faced the flag, saluted, and said the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

All students were given a certificate acknowledging that they “Learned the Pledge of Allegiance” along with a coloring sheet about the Pledge of Allegiance.  In addition, each child received an American Flag, a VFW Buddy Poppy, information on the proper display and retiring of the American Flag, a copy of the poem “In Flanders Fields”, and a story about the Buddy Poppy.

This program has been a tradition, first at the former Delaware Valley Central School, Callicoon and the Jeffersonville-Youngsville Central School and now at the Jeffersonville campus of Sullivan West Central School, for over 60 years by the H. Russell Kenyon VFW Auxiliary.  The Allan Milk VFW Auxiliary has joined in helping with the program in recent years.
