LOCH SHELDRAKE –– The Sullivan Generals Women’s College Basketball team welcomed in the Bryant and Stratton Bobcats for an early non-league matchup on Thursday. In a tale of two half’s the Bobcats jumped out to big first half lead where they had built a 20-point lead by the break, 44-24. The Generals came storming back in the second half to defeat the Bobcats 78-68.
The game started off in the first quarter with both teams looking to play fast and push the pace. The Bobcats’ full court press, and fast pace of play would test the Generals’ depth. Sullivan only had seven players dressed for the game. The Bobcats fast start led to Generals coach Carl Graham calling a timeout 2 minutes into the game. The Bobcats fast pace and defense frustrated and flustered the Generals early on. The Bobcats had built a 23-10 lead over the Generals by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw a similar storyline play out as the visiting Bobcats ball control, ball movement, scoring, and tough defense would help them build on their lead over the Generals. The Bobcats would extend their lead to 34-16 with under 5 minutes to play in the second quarter. The Generals’ sloppy first half play with turnovers and missed opportunities contributed to their deficit.
In the third quarter however the Generals set out to get back into the game by limiting turnovers and converting on offense. The Bobcats would see their lead shrink down to 10 halfway through the third quarter. The Bobcats would then call a timeout looking to regroup. By the end of the third quarter the score was 55-54 with the Bobcats clinging to a 1-point lead over the Generals.
The Generals controlled the fourth quarter. They grabbed a 56-55 lead early on. Their first lead of the game. In addition to limiting turnovers, the Generals were able to capitalize on second chance opportunities by crashing the offensive glass and grabbing offensive rebounds. Once Sullivan took the lead they would not look back.
The Generals would see their lead grow to 68-57 causing the Bobcats to call one last timeout. The Bobcats fought back hard trying to come back but ultimately falling short. The game would end with the Generals on top with a final score of 78-68. The victory would see their record move to 3-0. The Bobcats would drop to 2-3 on the season.
