If you want to try to label a person, it seems that lumping them into their zodiac signs may not be the way to go anymore. People are now influenced by what generation they were born into. I joined the world as a baby boomer. Those born after the “boomers” fell into generations that were named following the Latin Alphabet such as generation X, Y and Z.
The members of Generation Y, also known as millennials, gave birth to a new generation that is rapidly growing today. Their children are part of Generation Alpha. Running out of available Latin letters, Generation Alpha is the first use of the Greek alphabet.
Generation Alpha, which I will refer to as Gen Alpha, has hit the mainstream of social media with its ever-expanding new language that to boomers like me sounds much like Klingon from “Star Trek.”
Gen Alphas were born between 2008 and, by some accounts, its numbers will expand until 2025. Gen Alpha with a projected population of over two billion by 2025 are expected to become the largest generation in history.
The Gen Alpha vocabulary’s rapid growth is accelerated because of the spread of artificial intelligence and social media. Gen Alphas are also the first group that grew up during the Covid-19 pandemic. They spent more time stuck in isolation at home than other generations. Many hours spent on social media sites such as YouTube, Tik Tok, Instagram led to a growing list of slang that allows them to communicate with each other without parental control. This column will highlight some of their verbiage in case you want to bridge the generational gap.
To borrow a phrase from my baby boomer generation it’s time to get you guys hip to Gen Alpha lingo. I’ve compiled the list of some of their most popular words that they made-up totally without the help of any Klingons.
Brain rot. Brain Rot is a general term that they use for people who spend too much time online watching low quality content that rots their brain and adds nothing to their life. For my generation it applies to people that spend hours a day watching videos on TikTok.
Skibidi. This slang could mean anything from good, bad, or cool. It’s named after a popular YouTube series that shows a face spinning around in the toilet bowl.
Skibidi Ohio Rizz. It’s a way to tell somebody that you think they’re weird.
Rizz. They made this one up by listening to the word charisma. It means someone with charmed magnetism and the ability to interact with others on social media. If you’re a rizzler that means you’re somebody who has a lot of charisma.
Sigma. Although it sounds like the name of a fraternity or sorority in “Animal House.” Alphas use it to praise a popular dominant independent leader. Someone who’s so cool and self-sufficient that they will be admired.
What The Sigma? Another example of how the language makes no sense. “What the sigma” has no meaning. Sometimes the Alphas use it to mean good or cool or what the heck.
Mewing. The act of pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth to try to create a stronger jaw line, a staple look for Sigmas, as defined above. The acting of mewing is pointed out by pressing your finger to your lips in a shushing gesture, then tracing your jawline.
Ohio. So, for some reason they use the name of the state to mean something weird or very odd. When strange things happened when people say that happens only in Ohio.
Cap. Very simply it just means something’s not true. So, it only follows that “No Cap” means that something is truthful.
Ate. This simple word they use to say you’re looking good or you’re doing something impressive and outstanding – keep up the good work. This is often followed up by “and left no crumbs.”
Noob. This word’s already been incorporated in many generations of slang language. It simply means someone who’s inexperienced and newer to an activity especially when it comes to the Internet like computing or gaming. It is a longshot if Gen Alpha slang will ever be used outside of their age range. However, they do use one creative expression that makes me smile. Someday you might even hear me say it.
Just Put The Fries In The Bag, Bro. It is their way of telling someone that they are taking too long and need to get to the point.
Well, that’s it for me now. I’ll use some slang that was shared by former generations. It’s time for me to skedaddle and bust a move back to my crib. Peace out.
