August 4 – There could be several reasons for people around the Town of Highland to know Kari Margolis. Theatre lovers may recognize her as an award-winning theatre actor, playwright and master teacher, and as the artistic director from her many performances with the international touring company, MB Adaptors which she co-founded with Tony Brown in 1984. Or just maybe you have recently ordered her new book “Walking the Artistic Path” in which she recounts her professional experiences in acting, her passion for the performing arts, her approach to theatre training-Margolis Method-where art and daily life intersect in unexpected ways.
I know Kari from her volunteer work for our Sunshine Hall Free Library where she serves on the Library’s Board of Trustees and manages their annual Treasures and Trinkets Sale.
Kari travels extensively with her schedule for teaching her Margolis Method theatre training program and in brief she explains it as based on the principal that “any concept about acting is only valid and valuable to us if we have a tangible way of practicing that vulnerable concept.” A hardworking woman with many talents for sure.
Kari and the MB Adaptors Company are presenting FLIGHT, a play written and directed by Kari and inspired by Tennessee Williams’ short story “A Day in the Life of a Clerk.” The story follows Ewards Schiller (Jarod Hanson), a misunderstood poet viewed as a threat by those around him because of his differences. Sponsored by the Statewide Regrant Program of NYS Council on The Arts with support from the Governor, New York Legislature, and administered by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, FLIGHT runs at Highland Yoga Studio, 111 Highland Lake Road: Friday, August 8 at 7pm, Saturday, August 9 at 7pm, and Sunday, August 10 at 2pm. Tickets are $25 may be purchased online at mbadaptors.org/flight.
This weekend one of my favorite events is coming up- the St Anthony of Padua Church in Yulan is having their annual chicken BBQ. This annual fundraiser for the Parish will be held on Sunday, August 10 from 12-5pm. The event is located in the covered Father Fabian Pavilion behind the Church, which offers ample seating and the options for dining in or taking food to go. The Knights of Columbus will prepare grilled chicken onsite. Each meal includes a soft drink or water, three side dishes, corn, potato salad, and coleslaw, roll, and a homemade dessert of your choice. Additionally, there will be a raffle featuring themed gift baskets, a 50/50, a live DJ and some fun games along the way.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for kids under the age of twelve years old. Ticket are for sale in the lobby of the Church after Mass, or contact the Rectory at 845-456-0404, or you can get tickets at the door on the day of the event. It is best to buy your tickets in advance since they always sell out. St. Anthony’s Church is located at 25 Beaver Brook Road in Yulan, and everyone is welcome to attend.
