The Sunshine Hall Free Library will host one of its most popular fundraisers on Saturday, August 8. The Treasures and Trinkets Sale runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the newly renovated Highland Town Hall, across from Peck’s Market on Proctor Road. The sale will feature hundreds of carefully curated donated items collected over several months. The Marvelous Kari Margolis, who has managed the successful fundraiser for the past six years, said this year’s donations are the largest yet. She expects five pickup trucks to make at least three trips each to move everything to Highland Town Hall for the sale.
Kari said this year’s sale includes more antiques items than ever, especially furniture. Shoppers will find kitchen collectibles, small appliances, indoor and outdoor furniture, pottery, glassware, rustic barn tools, power tools, camping gear, original artwork, children’s toys, linens, vintage chairs and dressers, a secretary desk, and several high-quality rugs, all at very reasonable prices. “The Treasures and Trinkets Sale is a lot of fun and a fantastic way to support the Sunshine Hall Free Library’s community programs,” Kari said, noting services such as preschool reading hour, the summer reading challenge, adult education, and online resources available to the community. The sale will run until 5:00 p.m., and all proceeds will go directly to the library. The Library Board is still accepting donations for the sale on Saturday, August 8, during setup at Town Hall on August 7th. Contact Kari about donations at kari@margolismethod.org.
Also, on Tuesday, August 4th at 6pm, the Sunshine Hall Free Library will be sponsoring a free Introduction to Meditation class lead by Christine Martin. No registration is required. For more information you can contact Christine at 703-254-7095. For more information about the services available at the Sunshine Hall Free Library, visit sunshinehallfreelibrary.org.
During the recent heatwave, someone told me it “was hotter than the hinges on the gates of hell outside,” which sounded about right. That is why I’m always on the lookout for a good chicken BBQ—anything that keeps me from turning on the stove. So, “winner winner, chicken dinner:” the next great chicken BBQ is Sunday, August 9, from noon to 5 p.m., sponsored by St. Anthony of Padua Church’s Parish Council in Yulan. The eat-in or takeout dinner includes half a chicken, expertly prepared by members of the parish’s Knights of Columbus, served with potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, corn on the cob, a beverage, and a choice of homemade dessert.
The event will also feature a themed basket raffle, a live DJ, a tricky tray, and games. The dinner will be held in the church’s covered pavilion, which offers plenty of seating behind the church at 25 Beaver Brook Road in Yulan. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children under 12. They may be purchased after Mass at 5 p.m. on Saturdays or 11:15 a.m. on Sundays, at the door if available, or by contacting the rectory at 845-252-6681.
