Keeping warm at Roscoe Winterfest

On Saturday, Roscoe Mountain Club and the Roscoe Beer Company hosted the annual Roscoe Winterfest. Though bitterly cold temperatures appeared to keep attendance lower than in previous years, spirits remained high indoors.

Outside, the skating rink—typically one of Winterfest’s busiest attractions—was used by only a handful of children throughout the afternoon as frigid temperatures forced changes to the event. Organizers shifted much of the programming indoors, moving vendors and children’s activity stations into heated spaces and setting up seating areas and fire pits outside to help keep attendees warm.

“Unfortunately the bitter cold had us shifting our plans the best we could,” said Shannon Feeney of the Roscoe Beer Company. “We had to move vendors inside as well as the kids’ activity center.”

Feeney said the pathway between The Barn and Wolff’s Lodge—normally lined with vendors and activities—was quieter than usual. To help offset the loss of some outdoor programming, organizers offered free axe throwing and snowshoeing.

Live music continued throughout the afternoon, with BJ Hendrickson and Far Beyond Gone performing for attendees inside The Barn and Wolff’s Lodge.

Despite the cold, Feeney said activity remained steady indoors, with food, drinks, and children’s craft stations spread across Wolff’s Lodge, The Barn, and Restaurant 1907.

“We kept the party going in all our inside locations,” she said.

Travis O’Dell, who attended the event, said the weather played a clear role in the smaller turnout. “There’s a lot less people here than usual because of the cold,” he said. “A lot of the vendors canceled.”

Feeney added that road conditions remained favorable despite the low temperatures, allowing the event to continue safely. “We were lucky to not have bad roads and snowy or icy weather on the day of,” she said. “People came out and had a good time despite the cold.”
