Lend a helping hand to local artist Eva Drizhal

Local artist Eva Drizhal, a 40-year resident of Callicoon, is facing mounting challenges as she continues treatment for both throat cancer and acute myeloid leukemia.

Her health battle began in 2023, when what was supposed to be a routine throat check revealed advanced cancer. Doctors soon discovered leukemia as well, leading to months of hospital stays, chemotherapy, surgeries and blood transfusions.

“It looks like it never ends,” Drizhal stated in referring to the ongoing cycle of treatments and setbacks.

The medical fight has also become a financial one. Despite Medicare coverage, Eva said the bills pile up into the thousands, sometimes for visits lasting just minutes.

Living largely on Social Security, she relies on the support of her partner and donations from friends to stay afloat.

“Without help, I’d be in trouble. I would be out on the street,” stated Drizhal.

Art remains both her refuge and her statement of resilience. Over the past two years, Eva has produced more than 130 works, often creating while in the hospital.

Doctors at Mount Sinai even displayed her drawings inside their surgical unit. She is planning a large show at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance next year.

Community support has been steady, with local artists and neighbors quietly contributing donations.

“It’s not my character to ask,” Drizhal told the Democrat, acknowledging that she now feels she has no choice as the bills mount.

Born in Prague, Drizhal fled communism before making her life in Sullivan County as a waitress, house cleaner and ultimately as an artist.

“I always did art,” Drizhal stated. “It’s my therapy and that’s my goal in life.”
